About Durban Poison
With a menacing name that hints at its powerful psychoactivity, Durban Poison is a pure indigenous South African Sativa breed. It is a bold and sticky variety that is well suited to a variety of growing conditions. Durban Poison has a THC content of between 15% and 25%.
Cannabis has been cultivated on the African continent at least since the 14th century; By the time of Dutch colonization, it had spread to the south, and indigenous Khoikhoi, San, and Bantu groups in South Africa had established cultivation and cultural acceptance of the drug, which they called dagga.
In the late 1970s, American breeder Ed Rosenthal selectively bred several plants from a bag of South African seeds that he brought to the US. USA Rosenthal then passed some premium specimens to fellow breeder Mel Frank, who fine-tuned the genetics to optimize resin content and flowering time. Frank’s efforts resulted in lines “A” and “B” from the original seed stock; Line B was given to Amsterdam breeder Sam the Skunkman, who further reduced the variety’s flowering time.
Durban Poison buds are medium to large in size. Although they have a dense and compact structure, typical of Indica varieties, their long and conical shape is more characteristic of Sativas. The green leaves of the forest are offset by bright orange pistils, intended to trap pollen from male fertilizer plants. A layer of milky white trichomes gives cured flowers a light sheen and an incredibly sticky texture. Durban venom has a classic, moist scent punctuated by hints of sweet licorice. The flowers are pungent and skunky when they open or burn and give off thick smoke that expands the lungs. The licorice scent is evident on the exhale, along with the taste of the sweet, almost gooey pine sap.
Durban Poison has a clear and focused effect that hits users immediately. Amplification of images and sounds may initially be disorienting, but in the correct configuration, it can slide into a buzzing, active head. Almost completely cerebral, with no hint of debilitating heaviness or sofa blockage, this strain can be especially helpful for creative endeavors – it’s a great way to take in the nuances of an intense movie or piece of music. Durban Poison can also be a strong social lubricant, helping smokers feel conversational and more comfortable. All of the medical benefits are more mental than physical – this strain can confer a feeling of mindfulness to help those who are constantly distracted by depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
It can also help people with attention deficit disorders maintain a deep and intense focus. Because it is so powerful and cerebral, Durban Poison can also have some undesirable side effects. It can put users into overdrive, making them nervous or nervous. It can also lead to a kind of quick association “mind race,” which makes smokers feel paranoid or out of control. Definitely better suited for daytime than nighttime sleep, Durban Poison is a quintessential wake-up and bake strain. Its height usually lasts between 2 and 3 hours.
Due to its resistant and time-tested genetics, Durban Poison is a good crop for newcomers to the crop. It can reach 12 feet in height and as such can be successfully grown outdoors in hot, semi-humid climates with constant daily temperatures between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Indoor growers will want to tame the height of Durban’s poison by bending and pruning thin branches in the vegetative stage. Thanks to its time-tested cultivation and internationally engineered genetics, this strain blooms remarkably fast for a Sativa, reaching maturity in 8 to 9 weeks when grown indoors and in late September when grown outdoors. Plants also reward growers with above-average yield.
Named after South Africa’s second-largest city, Durban Poison offers an opportunity to experience one of Africa’s contributions to the panoply of potent varieties of local varieties. It has a sweet hashish smell and a high resin content which makes it particularly valuable in the production of THC concentrates such as breakage and wax. Often compared to espresso, Durban Poison provides users with a mobile, active high that’s as enjoyable at a party as it is alone, performing creative or mundane tasks.
